  • Point of the brush and grey wash with some areas of the drawing outlined in red chalk/oil, within pen and brown ink framing lines
  • 318 by 455 mm

Condition

Laid down on thin japan paper. There is a tiny hole in the lower right corner of the sheet. The sheet has undulated slightly at the lower margin. There are faint creases running vertically down the centre of the sheet from the paper drying process. Medium is in good condition and the sheet is relatively free from staining.

Catalogue Note

Related to Gerard de Lairesse's painting of the same subject in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin, dated to c. 1667/70, this drawing is probably a ricordo after the painting.The only main difference between the oil and the present sheet is that the animals captured in the cloth, centre right, are not included in the drawing.   Interestingly, our composition, which shares similar dimensions to the painting, has touches of red oil throughout which suggests that this sheet was created from a transfer or counterproof from the painting. 1.
