Condition
The panel is made up of a single plank which is flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured and uneven. The craquelure is quite pronounced in the sitter's face but is not distracting. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a handful of small spots of retouching in the sitter's face, most notably one near his temple, as well as a few further small spots in the upper and lower left-hand corners, and scattered in his coat and collar. In overall very good condition.
