Condition

The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The canvas shows some evidence of wear, particularly in the curtain and tassels centre left. There is some frame abrasion along all four edges with associated spots of paint loss and some visible retouching. Retouching is also visible in the sitter's neck, to the left of the lowest part of his coat, and scattered throughout his coat and the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as some further spots in the crown lower left, along and towards the left margin, in the lower right-hand corner, and tiny flecks scattered in his flesh tones. In overall fair condition.
