1) Heddle Nash's working copy of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, the Novello vocal score marked up and signed by the tenor, with TWO AUTOGRAPH ADDITIONS BY ELGAR, tipped in

    i) ELGAR, autograph letter signed ("Edward Elgar"), thanking Nash for his letter, advising that the second item he mentions should be performed with a piano and looking forward to hearing him sing Gerontius, 1 page, 4to, printed stationery of Sir Edward Elgar, O.M., K.C.V.O., Master of the King's Musick, Worcester, 28 April 1930, laid down obscuring the title



    ii) ELGAR, album-leaf signed and inscribed by the composer praising Heddle Nash's first performance in the title role, with Elgar conducting Gerontius for the last time ("Many thanks to Heddle Nash, Edward Elgar, Croydon, 10th Nov 1931"), laid down, with Heddle Nash's performance markings throughout the score, including for the first complete gramophone recording of the oratorio (8-13 April 1945), with his hand-written list of appearances in the role (1931-1939), 8vo, red cloth boards, 1930-1945, very worn, hinges broken, repairs with translucent adhesive tape



2) Heddle Nash's marked-up copy of Così fan tutte for Glyndebourne, with photographs, programmes and a pencil drawing of Nash's stage make up tipped in, 8vo vocal score, Novello, red cloth boards, 1934-1937 



3) Heddle Nash's marked-up copy of Vaughan Williams's Serenade to Music, the OUP vocal score (1938), SIGNED BY THE COMPOSER ("R VaughanWilliams"), and by Heddle Nash, together with a copies of the letters of invitation to sing at the premiere in October 1938, card wrappers inscribed by Nash, programme signed by the composer laid down



4) Collection of ten music manuscripts written by Heddle Nash, being his performing versions of songs by Handel ('Ombra mai fu'), Purcell ('I attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly', 'Come all ye Songsters of the Sky', 'I See She Flies Me Ev'rywhere' and 'Love Quickly is Pall'd'), 'The Last Rose of Summer' and 'Dafydd y gareg wen'

Catalogue Note

Heddle Nash (1894-1961) was the leading British lyric tenor of his generation, appearing in operas at Covent Garden and Glyndebourne.  He is especially remembered for performing The Dream of Gerontius with Elgar and for the first complete gramophone recording in 1945.
