Catalogue Note

This portrait is evidently modelled on Franz Hanfstaengl's photograph taken in Munich in 1865, following the staging of Tristan und Isolde there in June: cf G. Braam, Richard Wagner in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie (2015), no.27, plate 77).
