Catalogue Note
The Nuovo lume is the only publication of the maestro d'abaco, Giovanni Sfortunati. Born in Siena probably in 1485, and instructed there in arithmetic by Lattanzio and Pietro Moreschi, Sfortunati was called to teach in Ferrara by Alfonso d'Este. All five editions of his book (first 1534, last 1568) were printed in Venice.
