The canvas is not lined. There is a milky varnish preventing UV light from fully penetrating, however examination under UV light appears to reveal no evidence of retouching. There are a few dots of paint losses in places, notably to the lower left corner and in the orange pigment around the clown's face. There are fine lines of craquelure and paint shrinkage most predominately to the black pigment notably to the bow tie and to the clown's proper left eye, nose and forehead. Colours are fresh and impasto is well-preserved. This work is in overall good condition.
