Condition

The canvas appears original. There are faint stretcher bar marks towards the upper and lower edges, only visible upon close inspection. There is an area of reticulation towards the lower edge at centre and there are one or two scattered instances of thin lines of cracking elsewhere. There appear to be three small areas of retouching in the lower right quadrant with one further instance in the lilies above centre. There is surface dirt and spots of studio matter and surface detritus, particularly visible in the lower left quadrant and the thicker areas of impasto to the whites. There is a layer of varnish. This excepting, the work appears in good overall condition. Inspection under ultra violet light is made difficult by the layer of varnish, but the aforementioned four areas of retouching are confirmed. The work is held in a canvas slip and gilt painted wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
