Condition
Compiled by Alex France at Hamish Dewar Ltd., 22/05/2018: Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what certainly appears to be the artist's original keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a stable structural support. The painting was inspected in its glazed frame for the purposes of this report. Paint Surface The paint surface has the artist's original unvarnished appearance. There are several areas of slightly raised networks of craquelure within the sky and also within the large grey boat in the left of the composition. These are stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a small spot of possible retouching above the large grey boat and a few tiny spots of retouching on the upper part of the right edge. There is also an area of uneven yellow fluorescence within the large grey boat. This is attributable to the artist's materials and techniques. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
