Catalogue Note

'I used to have one or two dreams recurring annually about the sea - I always thought the stories were overdone & the drama & the terrific intense colour - but the real thing has been much more so.' (Ben Nicholson, letter dated 4th December 1939, quoted in Jeremy Lewison, Ben Nicholson, Tate, London, 1993, p.59).
