Catalogue Note

Tigers stands as an exquisite and rare example of Lee Man Fong’s skillfully rendered animal paintings, executed in a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western stylistic techniques. In Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes many important values and is highly revered. They are often dubbed the kings of the animal kingdom, not only for their perceived confidence, but also because the stripes on their foreheads resemble the Chinese character for king (王). Lee masterfully captures their lush fur and elegant grandeur, while positioning them in a dynamic and balanced composition.
