Catalogue Note

Ramkinker Baij was born in 1910 in Bengal, India and trained at the Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. Baij was renowned for his tendency towards abstraction at a time when the majority of British-founded art schools espoused academic realism.  The present work on paper depicts an avenue of trees dappled with sunlight. The unusual attribution of sky blue and sunset yellow and amber to the trees, rather than to the sky, gives the impression of a landscape set alight by the glow of dusk. Baij adeptly creates a sense of depth and perspective with washes of darker colors, inviting the viewer to contemplate the last fleeting moments of twilight.
