Catalogue Note

A multi-disciplinary artist, Kudzanai Chiurai has created a broad repertoire of work consisting of photography, film, painting, drawing, performance and sculpture. Part of a much larger multi-medium series entitled State of the Nation, these two powerful photographs by the young Zimbabwean artist depict scenes from a constructed African nation suffering at the hands of violent conflict. Creating work laden with enticing visual imagery, Chiurai makes use of a difficult and complex history to comment on the current state of the African continent, focusing on the socio-political issues faced by many. A sub-series of State of the Nation, Chiurai’s Revelations photographs began in 2011 and look to more deeply examine the ways in which Western society views the state of the African continent and the effect of a rapidly globalising world on war-torn African states. Born in 1981 in Zimbabwe, one year after independence, Kudzanai Chiurai’s earlier work consisted of commentary on the ongoing social, political and economic issues plaguing modern Zimbabwe. Exiled from his home country upon producing a series of works that criticized the Zimbabwean government, Chiurai now lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A fine art graduate of the University of Pretoria, the artist began exhibiting internationally in 2003 and has enjoyed several solo exhibitions including Selections from Revelations at MoCADA in New York (2015) and Regarding the Ease of Others at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town (2018). Kudzanai Chiurai has participated in several group shows, including Figures & Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2011) and Impressions from South Africa, 1965 to Now at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City (2011). In 2012, the artist was awarded the FNB Joburg Art Prize.
