Catalogue Note

The Grand Stage of Humanity If the stage can be thought of as a distillation of the world, then the world is a stage that is boundless. Guan Liang travelled extensively during this life; he studied abroad in Japan in his early years, then thoroughly explored the corners of his own country during the years of the Republic of China; With the establishment of the new China, beginning in the 1950s, the nation took on an entirely new appearance. Guan Liang’s landscape pieces reflect these scenes of socialist China. Completed in 1965, Cattle Pasturing (Lot 1034) illustrates the ease and bounty of life in the countryside. The mountain villages appear as they have since the beginning of civilization, the flourishing earth, a scene of peace and happiness with everyone in the family provided for.
