Description

Condition

The panel is flat and stable. It is uncradled is made of three vertical boards; one join is held together with what appears to be some adhesive support, and the other join once had horizontal. The paint surface is flat and stable and reads well Beneath a clear varnish and details are well preserved, for example in her jewelry and the decorations on her gloves. Inspection under UV reveals milky varnish that is slightly uneven in areas. It also reveals some scattered retouches to her face, concentrated in her forehead, around her nose and cheeks. There are some scattered thin lines and spots of retouching in the background, and along the aforementioned joins. There is some strengthening to some of the darker details of the costume, for example in her fur cuff, and in some of the delicate details of her black garb. Offered in a carved wood frame.

Catalogue Note

A record at the Rijksbureau Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) notes that the present painting was shown on 3 March 1941 to Dr. Max Friedländer, who described it as ‘a wonderful and good work of a Dutch Master from the 1550’s.'1  Although Dr. Friedländer notes that he was shown the painting by Dr. Vitale Bloch, there is no record of the work in Dr. Bloch’s personal papers in the Stichting Nederlandsch Kunstbezit (SKD). 1.
