Description

  • Johan Moreelse
  • Heraclitus with a globe
  • oil on canvas
  • 25 1/2  by 20 5/8  in.; 64.8 by 53 cm.

Condition

Relined and under an uneven varnish. There are visible bands of yellowed varnish around all four edges, and some scuffing near the left edge. The paint surface in the figure and globe have been very well retained and there is good detail in these areas, especially the flesh tones, hair and beard. The background and darks of the costume are a bit pressed and abraded and by comparison these areas have lost some definition. There are some discolored restorations visible to naked eye in costume, his left wrist and hand, and in background to left of figure's head. Under UV light: it is difficult to read through the old varnish. Retouches on top of the old varnish include those already mentioned above as well as on his mouth, a few very small ones on forehead, cheek and nose. This painting has not been attended to in a long time and would benefit from cleaning and sensitive restoration which would improve the overall appearance. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus (circa 535-circa 475 BC) was known as the "weeping philosopher" who mourned the fate of mankind.  It is interesting to note in this depiction the inclusion of "America" on the globe he is contemplating.
