Description

  • Salomon van Ruysdael
  • Still life of game on a ledge and in a basket, a landscape beyond
  • signed with monogram on the ledge lower center: SVR

  • 28 1/2 by 23 3/8  in.; 72.4 by 59.4 cm.

Condition

The panel is made up of two pieces of wood which is uncradled but has butterfly battens set into the central vertical join which runs from to bottom. The panel is flat and stable. The surface is clean and the painting is presentable. The paint surface overall has been very well preserved and there is lovely retention of detail in the still life elements. Under UV light: there is a central vertical line of retouching (about 1/2 in. wide) that runs all along the join (this runs through the head of the upper bird and the bodies of some of the birds lying on the ledge). There are some very small inpaints along the wood grain in the background, mostly in the upper half of the picture. A few very small retouches on ledge lower right. Aside from the retouching on the birds mentioned above, the still life elements look very good with only few tiny touches. This painting can be hung as is. Offered in an ebonized wood frame.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for confirming the attribution to Salomon van Ruysdael based on firsthand inspection.  While Ruysdael is known for his landscapes and marines, he did paint a few still lifes, mostly of game in baskets or hanging above a ledge. The present picture can be compared to the still life of birds in a basket in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem (inv. no. os 73-43), which is signed and dated 1659
