SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY

Description

Set with three cabochon sapphires weighing 46.86, 10.09 and 9.93 carats respectively, each within a frame of cushion-shaped and circular-cut diamonds, brooch fitting detachable with Austrian assay marks for gold and silver, accompanied by a brooch, a later pair of earrings and a hair ornament fittings, fitted case stamped Ernst Paltscho.

Condition

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 102184 and Gübelin report no. 18090058, no. 18090059 and no. 18090060, stating that the cabochon sapphires, weighing 46.86, 10.09 and 9.93 carats, measuring 18.69 x 18.48 x 14.18mm, 11.06 x 10.27 x 9.49mm and 11.01 x 10.17 x 9.39mm, are of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating,together with a appendix letters. One brooch fitting with Austrian assay marks for gold and silver. Sapphires blue of medium strong saturation, with some minor typical inclusions and colour zoning visible under 10x magnification, minor scratches and nicks. For more information on the sapphires, please refer to the SSEF and Gübelin reports. Diamonds estimated to weigh a total of approximately 12.00 - 15.00 carats, on average J-L colour, SI-I clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount. Signs of wear to the metal consistent with age and use, with signs of tarnish. Clasps secure, sliding safety catches. Overall, in very good condition. Four brooch fittings, one later hair ornament fitting and one later pair of earrings fitting, the lid stamped with a crown and the initials 'N.D.'. Two screws deficient. Gross weight approximately 43 grams. Fitted case stamped ERNST PALTSCHO, GRABEN 13, WIEN.

"The described set consists of a sapphire of impressive size and weight, combined with a matching pair of sapphires. Perfectly cut as high-domed cabochons, these three sapphires are characterised by an attractive and matching colour and a very fine quality. .... Assembling a set of three natural sapphires from Kashmir of this size and quality can be considered very rare and exceptional."
