Catalogue Note

FASTENING WIZARDRY Van Cleef & Arpel's iconic 'Zip' necklace exemplifies the Maison's creativity and capability to transform the everyday into exquisite jewels. This ingenious creation is credited to originate from a suggestion from the Duchess of Windsor in 1938, when she proposed to Renée Puissant - the Maison's artistic director and daughter of Alfred Van Cleef - that a piece should be created based on the concept of a zip fastener. This was the beginning of a period of technical advancements in jewellery-making for the Maison, with the micro-engineering of this design taking the Maison's workshops decades to perfect, and the first model for the 'Zip' necklace was presented to the public in 1951.

Celebrated as a collier fermeture eclair, the highly flexible and decorative strip can be converted from a necklace to a bracelet. Continuously revived through various interpretations by Van Cleef & Arpels, Lot 1780 highlights the Maison's definitive and dexterous aesthetics, fashioned of yellow gold decorated with diamonds, emblematic of pieces created since the 1950s.
