Condition

The canvas appears to be original. There is a faint undulation to the canvas towards the upper left corner. There is a pattern of craquelure in places in the upper half of the canvas, most visible to the pale pink pigment, with one area of reticulation to pink pigment towards the centre. There is one loss to the textured impasto in the centre of the main glossy, textured black form, with one or two possible flattened impasto tips elsewhere. There is surface dirt and instances of studio matter. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish in the black pigment and possible evidence of historic infilling to areas of craquelure. The work is presented in a painted wooden slip and held within a stained wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
