Literature

Richard Cork, David Bomberg, New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 1987, cat. no.211, illustrated p.165.

Condition

There is one very small dent to the canvasboard to the extreme upper right corner and some minor undulations to the board throughout. The edge of the canvas weave is just visible to the extreme right edge. There is one very faint line of cracking to the baker's right upper arm, visible upon close inspection. There are instances of studio matter in places and surface dirt throughout. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals light fluorescence in five small areas to the right of the composition and a further area above the figure's back, which appear to be consistent with sensitively executed retouching. The work is held in a gilt painted wooden frame within a canvas and painted wood slip. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
