  • height of taller 18 in.; 45.7 cm
each carved with a sagely old man sitting leisurely on a rocky outcrop leaning against an extended arm while dangling one leg and propping up the other, wearing long robes and a loose cap, the wispy beard grazing against the rounded belly, the face animated and mouth open in conversation with the spirited young boy standing before him, all atop an integral waisted square pedestal draped with a 'cloth', traces of gilt

Condition

Each sculptural group has vertical splits to the wood from age (with a couple small associated losses) and minor expected surface wear, including scattered small flakes and abrasion to the lacquer and gilt, and minor small losses. One has a chip to the reverse (approx. 1 x 2 cm). One of the boys has both arms re-stuck; the other boy has one arm re-stuck.
