Catalogue Note

This design of this lot is inspired by a model for a gilt bronze eight-light chandelier with satyr's maks attributed to Boulle, four examples of which are in the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris (one ill. H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen. Die Bronzearbeiten des Spätbarock und Klassizismus, Munich 1986, Vol.I, p.54, fig.I.6.10).  A version of the model was acquired by Frederick the Great for Schloss Sanssouci, Potsdam (ill. André Charles Boulle, 1642-1732: un nouveau style pour l'Europe, exhibition catalogue, Frankfurt, Museum für Angewandte Kunst, 2009, no.33 p.270-71), and a further related chandelier is in the Wrightsman Collection, Metropolitan Museum (ill. F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York 1966, vol.II, no.177 p.346-47).
