Philip Lehman was born in New York City, son of the German immigrant Emanuel Lehman who co-founded the investment bank Lehman Brothers. He formed an extensive art collection to fill his five-story townhouse built in 1889 at 7 W. 54h St, now known as the Lehman Mansion and designated a historical landmark.  Much of his artwork was inherited by his son Robert (d.1969) who added to the collection that was later bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum, where it is exhibited in the Robert Lehman Wing.
