Catalogue Note

On the outbreak of the Second World War, Britain began a naval blockade of Europe, designed to prevent the import of food, ammunition and other valuable materials into Germany. However, by Christmas 1940, much of mainland Europe had fallen to the Nazis. In Shepard’s cartoon, Adolf Hitler, his Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring and the Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop spend Christmas feasting on the spoils of Europe. The festive spread including the produce of Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Denmark and Romania.
