Catalogue Note

Israel's consummate realist painter captures the loan hill, Tel Kakun, situated in the vast horizon of the wide-open Hefer Valley landscape, the panoramic view emphasized by the bold horizontal canvas. Another painting of this view was included in the 2012 exhibit Fields of Vision - Landscapes by Israel Hershberg at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Hershberg said of the four works on view "I would hope people would stop and embark on a journey of another kind, one that allows for exploration and discover via a hungry eye. I would hope my paintings slow things down a bit, slow looking. In a very fast-everything world, I want the paintings to seduce." (Interview with John Seed, Huffington Post, 2013)

Hershberg's work is held in prominent private and public collections such as the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and the Jewish Museum, New York. In 1998, Hershberg opened the Jerusalem Studio School, cultivating younger artists in the figurative art tradition. In 2014, he founded JSS in Civita, an immersive summer residency for the school's students to learn en plein air painting in the Italian landscape.
