Condition
This work is undamaged and shows no retouches. It does not seem to have ever been cleaned. The paint layer appears to be slightly dirty, and there are indications of dirt to the right and left side of the head. The work would probably improve if it were lightly cleaned. The board on which the work is painted is nailed around the edges to a framework on the reverse. These nails were in place before the work was painted, but they have become slightly visible, particularly across the lower center, lower left, and upper left. Catalogue Note
“In his best canvases, [Guerrero Galván] lovingly depicts children and women. His characters, treated with great lyricism, appear eternalized in a sort of trance, detained in the movement they seemingly will carry out. The colors are always warm in his paintings, the varied gamma of earthy hues and reds, whites, and blacks reflect his taste and a selection that is conscious of a chromatic tradition emerging from the use of color that he witnessed in his native town during his formative years.” —Fernando Gamboa in Visión poética de un gran pintor: Jesús Guerrero Galván (1910-1973), 50 óleos en su exposición homenaje (exhibition catalogue), Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, 1977, p. 3
