Condition

This work is in lovely condition. The canvas is unlined and still on its original stretcher. The very heavy paint layer is stable and seems to be completely undamaged. The painting seems to be clean. No retouches are apparent. The work should be hung as is. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)

Catalogue Note

"A world expressed with the baroque brush of René Portocarrero: scrolls, arabesques, fruity reminiscences, the leaves of unknown plants, birds on their heads like butterflies, lights between leaves, imaginary botany spilled on their bodices, or, on the contrary, night veils, shades, a play between grays and blues, transparencies of color, framing the green look of some enigmatic 'belle de nuit...'" Alejo Carpentier, "Portocarrero in Venice," in The World, 1966
