Condition

This work is in overall good condition. The panel is sound but is slightly warped and bowing at the lower right edge. The colors are fresh and the impasto is well preserved. There is a small crack to the panel at the upper left edge about 1/4 inch in length. There are two hairline instances of craquelure in the figure's left shoulder and a few similar instances in the white pigment on the figure's right shoulder. Under UV light: there are thin strokes of inpainting throughout the left edge in the pink pigment. Several further strokes along the right edge in the background and a few to the figure's torso.

Catalogue Note

This painting is one of several studies for a portrait of the wife of Jacques Heim, the director of a fashion boutique. Sonia Delaunay produced fabric designs for him, including that worn by the sitter in the present work.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Richard Riss.
