Condition

Oil on canvas laid down on panel; the panel is cradled. There is a chip of wood missing from the reverse of the panel at the upper edge, approximately 2cm long. Examination under UV light reveals some areas of retouching to the extreme edges, primarily to the upper edge and the upper part of the right and left edge. There are three further scattered flecks of retouching above the church spire. There is some pigment loss to the canvas surface at the corners, particularly to the lower right corner. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

'Thus Eragny was more than a secluded refuge, it was a place where Pissarro engaged intensely and creatively with the central theme of his art.' (Christoph Becker, Camille Pissarro (exhibition catalogue), Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Stuttgart, 1999-2000, p. 110)
