Catalogue Note

Ella Yurievna Kagan, known as Elsa Triolet, was a Russian-French writer, active in the Surrealist circle of artists and intellectuals in Paris at the beginning of the 20th Century. Through her excellent education in her native Russia, Elsa wrote in German and French as well as her mother tongue. At the outbreak of World War II, Elsa married the French writer and one of Surrealism's founding fathers Louis Aragon. The couple participated actively in the Resistance during the war and continued their left-leaning political mission for the rest of their lives. The present work was created in Elsa's honour by her close friend Joan Miró two days after her death .
