Condition

CASE Case in overall fair condition with wear, scuffing, and light oxidation. The watch likely received previous professional polish. Case with some light scuffs overall. Left side case band with material wear from opening and closing. Lug holes for spring bars with some inconsistency likely from use and some polish. Some very light patina overall. Please note that the associated buckle is unbranded. Crystal glazing with scuffing and scratches throughout. DIAL Dial is attractive with some light wear and dust. The dial is likely a later added dial, as the signature reads Patek Philippe, rather than Patek Philippe & Co., which is correct for the period. MOVEMENT The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. ***Please be advised that the bands on this watch are made of materials derived from endangered or otherwise protected species (i.e. alligator and crocodile) and thus not sold with the watch, they are for display purposes only. We will remove these bands prior to international shipping.***

Catalogue Note

This model, Ref. 96, the 'Calatrava', was produced for over 40 years. Production began in 1932. It is perhaps the most recognizable of Patek Philippe's designs, the classic vintage watch of understated elegance. Examples with unusual features, such as the black dial on the present lot, are of particular interest to collectors as a variation on a classic theme.
