The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. The dial is in excellent condition. The case is in very good condition with some minor surface scratches to the band. The flutting to the lugs is quite sharp and the hallmarks to the sides can easily been seen. The folding clasp in very good condition with no visible blemishes. Reference 3970 was first launched in 1986 with a snap-on case back. Two years later Patek Philippe modified the design to a screw-down water resistant type case back, which is the reference 3970E. The reference 3970E (for étanche or water-resistant) was produced in yellow, white and pink gold, as well as platinum. The reference 3970, along with its predecessors the 2499 and 1518, holds an imminent position in the eyes of complicated Patek Philippe watch collectors today. Reference 3970 was discontinued and replaced by reference 5970 in 2004. 

Manufactured in the last year of production, this 3970 retains nice fluting to the lugs and crisp hallmarks.
