Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a Zenith certificate, international warranty card, instruction manual, loupe, hygrometer and presentation box In celebration of the brand’s 150th anniversary, Zenith has created a revolutionary gyroscopic module invented for Gravity Control. The manufacturer only produced 10 pieces and named it the Academy Hurricane. This watch which symbolizes Christopher Columbus creating the Grand Voyage, is being rewarded as the ‘Best Complicated Watch’ category in the 2011 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve. With five years of research and development, the pride of this patented gravity control system is that the watch only needs to be regulated in one position, by eliminating all gravity-induced errors. Unlike the tourbillon, which make adjustments for the various positions by equalling them out along the four vertical axes every minute, the Gravity Control system of this watch was designed to ensure that the regulating organ and the escapement are permanently kept in this position.

This present watch is not only mechanically remarkable, it is also artistically crafted, with lavish decoration throughout the watch. All the sub-dials on the dial are white enamel over solid gold plates. The base plate is decorated in blue lacquer. Even more luxuriant is the back of the watch, with a large gold plate covering the movement. In tribute to the legendary explorer Christopher Columbus, the case back of this Grand Voyage II brilliantly illustrates Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America in 1492. The vibrant flag of the Spanish monarchy, surrounded by rich palm trees, the chief is wearing feathers and carrying a colourful parrot, while his female companion is bearing a plate of fruit to offer him narrates the story. On its background, sailing across a deep blue ocean, the three famous Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria ships stand out against a luminous sky.
