Catalogue Note

Accompanied with by a Roger Smith certificate, cardholder, travelling pouch and presentation box. Roger Smith is currently the greatest watchmaker in Britain and one of the best and most traditional watchmakers of today. Born in Bolton, England in 1970, Smith was advised by his father to attend the Manchester School of Horology and from there he had met his mentor Dr. George Daniels who visited the school in 1987 whilst presenting his iconic Space Traveller pocket-watch. It was at that moment that Roger said, "Suddenly, my life's purpose was crystal clear - though its path was less defined." Roger aspired to become a watchmaker like Daniels who created stunning timepieces with an exquisitely built and finely finished movement but all by hand and in "the Daniels Method". From then on, Smith became Daniels' only apprentice as he had mastered 32 trades of the British watchmaking to become worthy of collaborating with the great master himself.

Smith had learnt much from Daniels' artistry of handcrafting timepieces from raw materials throughout his 20 years of partnership, until Daniels' death in 2011. Together they created the The Millennium' Series in 1998 to celebrate the acceptance of the Daniels Co-axial escapement by the Swiss watch industry. Following the great success of The Millennium Series, Smith established his own atelier in 2001 and created 4 series of collections and special collections such as the Daniels Anniversary, The Great Britain and the Open Dial.

Today, Smith and his team continue to carry Daniels' legacy and perseverance to construct the most beautiful and exquisite timekeeping instruments. With the intricate artistry of his watches, Smith is only able to produce ten watches each year.

The present lot is the Commission Piece that has been made to order. His Series 2 timepiece took three years to develop and it is the first wristwatch ever designed and made entirely within Great Britain in the last 50 years. A standard issued Series 2 would feature an hour, minute, second and power-reserve indication with an engine-turned dial and a silvered chapter ring to the Roman numerals. However, the present lot does not incorporate the silvered chapter ring but rather, a full engine-turned dial with applied blue steel numerals and hands, and guilloché base plate and bridges. Roger Smith's watches are a great display of excellent watchmaking at its finest and simplest form. Each timepiece created is truly a work of mechanical art.
