Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin and Extract from the Archives. The Nautilus celebrated its 40th birthday in 2016. Its creator Gerald Genta has designed this watch within 5 minutes in a restaurant watching the Patek Philippe executives dining. It was a watch that was born during the 70s quartz watch crisis.  A design drawn in 5 minutes could last beyond 40 years and more years to come, is certainly an icon of times.

Considering that most watch brands during that period was still manufacturing the classic yellow gold bracelet watches, Patek Philippe has taken an advance approach to put this bold watch design inspired by the porthole transatlantic liner, with wide bezel and ‘ears’ at each side evoking the large hinges of those watertight windows. Commercially speaking, this is not only a revolutionary in design but Patek Philippe also launched an advertisement campaign “one of the world’s costliest watches is made of steel”. At then, by comparison, a Patek Philippe mechanical wristwatch in 18k-gold with an 18k-gold mesh bracelet retailed approximately below US$4,000, and a steel Rolex Daytona chronograph retailed for approximately below US$1,000. The first version of Nautilus – reference 3700/1 in stainless steel was retailed for approximately at US$3,100, was made from block of nickel-chrome molybdenum steel. Patek Philippe has launched the advertising campaign featuring the sword and knight, conveying the message of ‘faithfulness’ between how a sword to a knight is. The entire concept of the Nautilus is to also capture the new market of younger clientele, which is now proven its success in the span of decades.
