Description

  • marked with city and maker's mark on staves, also Dutch control mark for foreign work
  • height 15 1/2 in.
  • 39.4 cm
modeled in the form of the tower on the town hall of the city of Emden, wide square borders tooled with trellis supporting octagonal towers with clock faces on four sides, two-tiered cupola tops, hung with bells in apertures

Condition

Half of one clock hand is missing, tips of some finials on galleries missing, some finials repaired with lead, one with upper patch to secure bells.

Catalogue Note

Johannes Beekman Hayens (W. Scheffler Goldschmiede Niedersachsens I, no. 180), son of silversmith Hans Epps Hayens, apprenticed to his father 1780's, master 1792, alderman 1803-04. These finials are copied from the central tower of the town hall of Emden, the tops relate to Neue Kirche in Emden, built in 1648.
