Description

  • 43.5 cm, 17 1/8  in.
the rounded sides rising from a short foot to an everted barbed rim, the slightly recessed central medallion freely carved with a landscape scene detailed with tall pine trees, encircled by stylised floral sprays at the well and repeated on the exterior, the rim bordered by a scrolling foliage pattern, covered overall in a thick celadon glaze leaving a ring on the underside burnt buff-orange during firing, the foot inscribed in Arabic script (Sultan Sulaiman Shikoh, 1635 – 1662)

Provenance

Acquired by the family of the present owner during the early 20th century.
Thence by descent.

Condition

This dish is in general good condition with the exception of two shallow chips to the rim (approx. 2x1 cm, 2.5x1 cm each), and some scattered fritting to the rim and foot. There are some glaze and surface scratches, and wear throughout. Minor firing imperfections include glaze inconsistencies and tiny areas of glaze pulling, and iron spots in various areas.

The five-drilled-dots pattern on the base of the present dish is also found on celadon wares in the collection of Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, such as a Longquan charger decorated with peony, attributed to the late 14th to early 15th century, illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics In The Topkapi Saray Museum Istanbul.
