Description

  • 13.2 cm, 5 1/4  in.
the baluster body rising from a short spreading foot to a waisted neck and galleried rim, carved with a loop handle opposite an upright spout, decorated with a band of ruyi border at the shoulders, with further stylised scrolls at the bottom of the handle and spout, the domed cover embellished with ruyi decorated gold, the stone of a semi-translucent greyish brown tone 

Condition

the vase with a hairline crack to the interior rim, measuring max. approx. 1.7cm. long, with a very small associated loss; there is a small polished chip to the spout. the cover with tears and some associated losses, also areas of oxidation and wear in consistent with age and use.

The cover of the present ewer has been rendered in the style of gemstone-embellished gold finials of the early 15th century; see several excavated from the mausoleum of Prince Liang Zhuangwang (1411-1441) in Changtan, Zhongxiang, Hubei province, illustrated in Liangzhuang Wanmu (Xia) / Mausoleum of Prince Liang Zhuangwang (II), Beijing, 2007, pls 151-6.
