2 volumes, 8vo (8 3/8 x 5 3/16 in.; 213 x 131mm). 2 lithographed plates, folding map; minor foxing primarily to endleaves, closed tear to map. Full contemporary calf, bound by Ingalton of Eton, spines with raised bands in six compartments, second and third gilt-lettered with black and green labels, others elaborately gilt, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; minor rubbing heads and tails of spines, a few scratches to covers.

Catalogue Note

First edition, Brooke-Hitching copy. Moorcroft was the first formally trained British veterinarian, and he travelled through the Himalayas and Central Asia to choose breeding-horses for the East India Company. He is regarded as "the father of modern exploration in both the Western Himalayas and Central Asia" (John Keay).
