Catalogue Note

A remarkable collection of photographs, offering a full and informal glimpse into one of Europe's preeminent hunting parties.

Anne de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Duchess of Uzès, was the great granddaughter of Philippe Clicquot-Muiron, and heir to the Veuve Clicquot champagne fortune. The stag hunt depicted in this album took place around 1902, and was hosted by the Dowager Duchess of Uzès, at the Château de Bonnelles. The Château—the favorite residence of the Duchess—had been an important hunting center for decades, with its owner an active participant in the sport. The title-page of the album features a photo of the Duchess on the hunt, galloping down a lane with an air of authority and purpose. The Château was famous for such gatherings, and the Duchess counted the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and Grand Duchess Marie, Queen Amélie of Portugal, King Constantine I of Greece, the Shah of Persia Ahmed, and many others among her guests.
