Catalogue Note

An incredible collection of photographs and manuscript accounts of the travel and hunting adventures of Max C. FleischmannMax C. Fleischmann, heir to the famous yeast fortune and principle stockholder of General Foods, was an accomplished aviator, baloonist, hunter, and yachtsman. He was often accompanied on his travels by his wife, Sarah, who was also a keen hunter, and together their passion took them around the globe. In an entry dated the 14th of February 1928, during a tour through South East Asia, Fleischmann writes: "DeFosse left to get Mrs. Fleischmann around 5.00 and they returned about 6.30. The writer walked out to meet her and said: 'Never mind, dear; sorry you were out in the rain but I hope you will go out in the morning and try it again.' She answered: 'I don't have to go out; I got him.' I said; 'Quit your kidding'. She said; 'Honestly, I got my tiger.' I again answered: 'I know you didn't because I didn't hear you shoot' — but I failed to realize that the rain on the palm thatched roof had killed the sound of her shot. The Tiger had come to the bait during the period that DeFosse was walking up to take Mrs. Fleischmann out of the blind and she killed it with one shot."

Following their time in South East Asia, the Fleischmanns made two separate cruises on the Haida. The first, through Alaska and British Columbia; the related album includes an account of the group's trout and salmon fishing. The second cruise brought the party through Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, and Columbia, and the accompanying photographs capture striking images of the pre-War Galapagos, to include its flora and fauna.

A fantastic group of images and narrative
