Perry U.S. Ship John Adams" in brown ink, 2 folding maps, one of which hand-colored; initial map with splits to folds, foxed, primarily marginal tear to Aa1, ink stain to verso of Rr2, dampstaining to lower margin, half red morocco over marbled boards, margins decoratively gilt, spine with decoratively gilt raised bands in five compartments, second gilt-lettered, edges marbled; extremities rubbed with some loss to morocco and board, corners bumped.

First American edition, Oliver Hazard Perry's copy, signed "Com O.H. Perry U.S. Ship John Adams" on the preliminary blankOliver Hazard Perry served aboard 'USS Adams' during the First Barbary War. He later became a national hero when he defeated a British squadron in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. Bonnycastle was a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Engineers. His 'Spanish America' includes sections on California, Florida, New Mexico, New Spain, Spanish possessions in the Caribbean, New Granada, Peru, Buenos Aires, Chile, and the like.
