Engraved broadside on vellum (15 7/8 x 12 5/8 in.; 404 x 322 mm), accomplished in a clerical hand, Washington, 21 February 1862, appointing George R. Dyer an "Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers with the rank of Captain," countersigned by the Secretary of War ("Edwin M Stanton"), embossed blue paper seal, martial vignettes by J. V. N. and C. H. Throop at head and foot, recording docket; commission mounted on mat board, some light soiling, accomplishment slightly faded. Matted, framed, and glazed with a portrait of Lincoln.

Catalogue Note

Dyer's commission is accompanied by an extensive archive relating to his military service, consisting principally of wartime personal correspondence during his assignment as Assistant Quartermaster at Pilot Knob, Missouri, 1862–1865. In addition to the correspondence, the archive contains Dyer's original 1885 GAR membership certificate from the Baxter Springs, Kansas, Post No. 123, and 1864 military railroad pass, telegrams, and several civilian photographs of Dyer.
