4to (13 3/8 x 10 5/8 in.; 340 x 270mm).  Hand-colored frontispiece, vignette on the title is uncolored as called for in the first issue, engraved dedication with hand-colored coat-of-arms, and 52 hand-colored aquatint plates by Thomas Sutherland after William Heath, list of subscribers at end (called for in early issues); some scattered foxing throughout, heaviest to tissue guards, generally not affecting images, "Battle of Barrosa" with expert repair to margin, not affecting image, "Battle of Albuera" with small hole or paper flaw, just affecting edge of image. Full brown calf, covers richly stamped in blind and gilt, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second gilt-lettered, others with repeat overall decoration in gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled; some rubbing to corners and joints.

Catalogue Note

First edition, first issue, large paper copy. The vignette on the title is uncolored as called for in the first issue.  As an artist, Heath specialized in military themes and in caricature, and this is probably the best known of his illustrated military books.
