Gerald Ford's copy of 'Cannon's Procedure in the House of Representatives'. Dated 1948, the volume is contemporary to Ford's first run for the United States House of Representatives (where he went on to serve thirteen terms). After Ford was released from active duty in the Navy, he became involved in Republican politics, and in 1948 challenged Bartel J. Jonkman, the incumbent Republican congressman. During this campaign, Ford famously spoke with voters as they left the factories where they worked, and visited local farms. After his victory in 1948, and a wager between area farmers and Ford, the candidate had not only earned himself a seat in the House of Representatives, but also a fortnight milking cows in Grand Rapids.
