Catalogue Note

This portrait of Eunice E. C. Marden and Luranda G. Marden is rare example of Joseph Davis’s work in an outdoor setting. It is a charming portrait of the children painted with bouquets, baskets of flowers, potted plants, a cat, a doll, birds and butterflies. Davis painted a portrait of their parents in the same year, and they are represented in his more typical double figure mode, seated facing each other at a table.
