Catalogue Note

The sitters in these portraits are George Musser (b. June 13, 1790) and Elizabeth Sweitzer Musser, who married July 22, 1821, and their three children Sarah (b. May 22, 1822), Edward (b. November 25, 1823) and Carolina (b. October 13, 1825).  Adam Musser (b. November 28, 1746), George’s father, is also represented in a portrait.   The children were all painted on October 23, 1826, and it is more than likely that the parents were painted at this time.  The portrait of Adam was painted several years prior to the others.
