Description

  • A river landscape with a horseman on a path and windmills beyond
  • inscribed with the artist's pseudonym J van Couver lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 19 7/8  by 30 in.; 50.5 by 76.2 cm.

Condition

The canvas is unlined and the impasto is in it's original state and remains fresh. The surface is visibly dirty. There is some minor bumping and pulling of the canvas in a number of areas. Craquelure is visible in the sky and on some darker pigments in the foreground. A quarter inch of a diagonal line of orange pigment is at bottom left. Some frame abrasions are along the left edge. The varnish fluoresces unevenly under UV light, but shows some spots of retouches scattered throughout the sky. There might be some possible retouches done on the foreground, but they are difficult to read as the varnish largely obscures it.
