Catalogue Note

According to Martelé's records as recorded by Larry Pristo in Martelé 950-1000 Gorham's Nouveau Art Silver, p. 406. saucers  PVU were completed on 4 June 1920, and the matching bouillon cups PVT five months later on 1 November 1920.  The cups were made in approximately 174 hours and the saucers in 204 hours.  The name of the chaser has not been identified however it is known that the cups required 240 hours of chasing and the saucers 228 hours.  The net factory price for the set at the time of completion was the substantial sum of $1,790.  The present lot matches a set of twelve coffee cups PVR and saucers PVS.  Additionally, twelve matching sherbet cups PVV, were finished on 20 January 1920, and are illustrated by Pristo on p. 84.
